Black Forest National Park

District of Rastatt

In 2014, a unique project began in Baden-Württemberg with the foundation of the Black Forest National Park – an area of 10,062 hectares of forest in which nature is free to flourish without any human intervention.

Nature is allowed to take its own course here, thus re-creating formerly endangered habitats for many plants and animals. Allowing nature free rein has priority over human land use and cultivation, which gives people the unique opportunity to witness the progressive development of true wilderness.

The protected areas run parallel to the B500 road, the ‘Schwarzwaldhochstrasse’ scenic route winding through the northern Black Forest.
