During the annual flat-race meetings in spring, summer, and autumn, the idyllic Black Forest town of Iffezheim is being transformed into a meeting point for the high society, a place to see and to be seen. The flat races are a pleasant mixture of elegance and down-to-earth fun, of the excitement of backing a horse and the relaxation of a day out in beautiful surroundings. It was Edouard Bénazet, founder of the world-famous Baden-Baden casino, who brought horse racing to Iffezheim in 1858. Ever since, the racecourse – one of most attractive and well-kept worldwide – has, with its unique flair, been the dominating feature in the life of this pretty little town of half-timbered houses.
