Christmas markets in the Black Forest

Christoph Eberle/STG

When visiting Germany in winter, make sure to not miss the Christmas markets in those towns full of small, cute timber-framed houses like Gengenbach (30th November to 23rd December 2019), Baden-Baden (28th November 2019 to 6th January 2020) or Freiburg (22nd November to 23rd December 2019). A train journey through the Black Forest via the Ravennaschlucht gorge on one of the four weekends before Christmas Eve is not only exciting but will take you over the 121 feet high Ravenna Bridge stone viaduct. “Germany’s tallest waterfalls” in Triberg are another must see. They drop 443 feet in total, passing several cascades en route. Between 25th and 30th December 2019, around one million candles and lights illuminate icicles and snow drifts around the bubbling mountain stream.
